The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was first founded in 1926 by Spencer Penrose. After being gifted a bear in 1916, he was inspired to collect animals, which would later lead to the creation of the zoo. The animals were first housed at Spencer Penrose’s Broadmoor Hotel. But after a monkey bit a guest, Penrose decided it was time to relocate the animals to their own home. The result was the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Another Great Read

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is best known for its incredible giraffe herd. Guests are able to come face-to-face with these magnificent animals, as they are allowed to pet and feed the giraffes from elevated pathways. The zoo has had over 200 giraffes at the zoo since its inception, and the giraffes have always been the zoo’s most popular attractions. Visitors love having the opportunity to pet and feed the wild giraffes with their friends, family members, and children.

Another popular attraction at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is the Budgie Buddies exhibit. The walk-in aviary allows guests to feed, pet, and interact with small birds known as “budgies”. This exhibit is especially popular amongst small children, as budgies are extremely friendly and docile. Budgies also have soft, small beaks, so they are not prone to biting.
