So, when should a furnace be replaced instead of repaired?

How do I know if my furnace is broken? When should a furnace be replaced instead of repaired, and how often should a home furnace be replaced?

On average, most furnaces have a lifespan of right around 20 to 30 years. Of course, that’s if you keep up with your regular HVAC maintenance services and keep your unit in good condition. As long as you prioritize furnace maintenance, then you shouldn’t have to have your furnace replaced for a few decades!

So, how often do you need to have your furnace serviced, then? Most furnaces need to be serviced at least once per year. If you have not been keeping up with your annual furnace maintenance services, then your furnace problems could be due to a broken or over-worked furnace.

How do I know if my furnace is damaged beyond repair?

So, when should a furnace be replaced if it’s damaged? How do I know if the damages are irreparable?

Great question. Not every damaged furnace is irreparable. Some damages are fairly easy to fix. But sometimes, furnace damages can not be repaired. If the damages are severe and were left untouched for too long, then those damages can worsen over time and eventually become irreparable.

Here are some signs that your furnace is irreparably damaged and needs to be replaced right away:

  • Strange noises coming from furnace
  • Rooms are not being heated evenly
  • Rising energy bills
  • Furnace has visible signs of cracks or rust around the unit
  • Excessive dust build-up around your home
  • Excessive dust, dirt, or rust particles
  • Your furnace is over 30 years old
  • You have never or rarely had your furnaced serviced
